9 Months Wellness Checkup

I took Lauren to the doctor today for her 9 month wellness checkup appointment. Here are her stats....

  • Weight: 15lbs 14 oz (6%)
  • Height: 28 1/2" (78%)
  • Head Size: 17 1/2" (62%)
We were scheduled to see Dr. Evans (our fave!) but she had a medical emergency the night before and so we ended up Dr. Stickney. He said that Lauren's growth was normal compared to her past checkups. He gave us some great suggestions on how to deal with her dry skin/eczema and cradle cap. The only thing he would like us to work on is her crawling. He said the most likely reason she isn't crawling is because she doesn't have to. (I had to admit that there was some truth behind that). He suggested we aggressively work with her 3 to 4 times a day and if in 3-4 weeks she still isn't crawling, then he wants her to undergo some test to make sure her motor skills are developing properly. I feel very strongly that it isn't because she isn't developing the correct motor skills, but that there is no motivation for her to crawl. When we put her on her stomach, she will play for a few minutes but then get aggravated and start crying. Of course, I pick her up (this is the only thing that I give into her with, because in my mind, I would rather fight the battle of her learning not to hit than learn to crawl). If she wants to go somewhere, she points and I take her to it. But I am going to follow the doctor's advice, (as well as what I think is best for Lauren), and be aggressive in our helping her learn to crawl. We also have a great resource in Aunt Jenny and Uncle Hal, who have been helping her with her tummy time, even before the doctors said anything about it. We will keep you posted as she progresses.

Sarah,
Hi! Your daughter is so cute! I read your post and my daughter, Amelia was also a late crawler (and then a late walker too). It turns out that she has a little bit of weakness in her muscles (low tone). We met with a physical therapist for 1 hour when she was 9 months old and she taught us how to work with Amelia on transitioning from lying down to sitting up. We worked on those transitions for 2 weeks and "viola" she was crawling. I highly recommend physical therapists as a wonderful resource to get kids over those milestones "humps." Anyway, Amelia is, of course, fine now (although we still have to work with her on strengthening her muscles). Take care and I will talk to you soon. Sims had terrible eczema when he was younger. The best products I found were Aveeno baby wash and lotion. Fortuanely, his seems to have gone away alltogether now. I am sure you're right about the crawling. I am sure she will be all over the place soon!

Thanks for your suggestions. I will definitely talk to her pediatrician about the PT and I had heard the Aveeno worked really well.
